Clay Rise is a self-built rural home in West Sussex, shaped by local heritage, craft, and landscape. Inspired by the region’s clay-tiled vernacular, Arts & Crafts ideals, and local sculptural influences, the design blends tradition with organic expression.
Conceived as an uplifting and joyful addition to the area, a sweeping clay-tile roof unfurls over a base of locally handmade brick. Inside, natural materials and flowing forms create a peaceful living environment - carefully crafted through close collaboration between architect, client, and local craftsmen.
Built within the grounds of the client’s previous home, the project represents both continuity and transformation. It is a house that grows from familiar ground, shaped by the architect’s long-standing knowledge of the area and its surrounding community.
The house takes its name from the red clay tiles that define its form, a continuous, sweeping roofscape of rising planes with curved geometries that appear to emerge naturally from the landscape. This dynamic form brings movement and rhythm to the structure, recalling the undulating contours of the land.
Below the tiles, the house is clad in locally sourced handmade brick. The brick and clay tiles not only root the house in its setting, but give it a tactile, crafted quality that echoes local tradition and the Arts & Crafts ethos.
Constructed using prefabricated timber panels, Clay Rise is highly insulated and designed for low energy use. The prefabrication allowed for swift on-site assembly and precise detailing, while the self-build nature of the project fostered a close collaboration between client, architect, and local trades, embedding care and craftsmanship at every stage.
Internally, the home is defined by light, flow, and natural materiality. Lime plaster, timber, and stone finishes create a calm, grounded backdrop to daily life, while carefully placed windows frame views to the sky and surrounding landscape.
Clay Rise is at once modest and expressive: a contemporary rural home that grows out of its setting, enriched by the cultural and material strata of its place. It is a house shaped by memory and imagination, rooted in tradition, yet reaching toward the future.
